Chairman's Report 31st October 2020

In the 17 years that I have been compiling the chairman’s reports, this is by far the strangest and saddest one to date. Our year started well (1st October onwards) with a talk on soft fruit by Mike Abel, followed by our AGM in November with a talk from an old friend of ours Peter Webb and our usual subsidised fish & chip supper.

The New Year commenced with our ever popular quiz night in January and Darren Legrio in February giving us ideas on “What to do with this space”.

We then started to suspect something was awry in March when we set up the hall using all the chairs in anticipation of the big crowd that Ken Crowther normally attracts. Unfortunately we only had 37 members and 5 visitors.

Things then went from bad to worse when Thurstable School telephoned and cancelled all events booked due to the Coronavirus. The rest as they say is history. All monthly meetings had to be cancelled and our 2 shows.

We did however manage to get some photos from members for a virtual spring show, best kept garden and autumn show. It has to be said that we did expect a lot more photos to be received. Photos have been published on our Facebook page and on our website and I would like to thank Alex for his technical know-how in arranging this.

We did also make enquiries from members about having Zoom meetings but unfortunately there were only a few people capable of Zoom so that was a non starter.

You have heard from our treasurer, and so on your behalf I would like to thank her for all her hard work. It also goes without saying that heartfelt thanks go to all the committee for their dedication. A note of empathy for Sue Lucas who books our speakers . As you probably know, speakers have to be booked well in advance so Sue finds herself in a state of limbo at the moment.

As far as the future is concerned, we will just have to wait and see when the rules are relaxed so that we can meet as a group again and enjoy the newly refurbished extension.

When we do resume, one possibility because of short notice would be to hold a quiz night which would not affect the booking of speakers.

Thurstable has been booked for our 2 shows on the 20th March and 4th September next year, so fingers crossed. In the meantime, take care, stay safe and I look forward to us meeting again in the new year.
